Roof Leaking During a Storm: What to Do
Put safety first: turn off power to wet areas if you can do it safely, and never go up on the roof during a storm. Catch the water with buckets, move your belongings, and if a ceiling is bulging, poke a small hole to drain it into a bucket. Photograph everything, then call a licensed roofer for an emergency tarp or temporary repair once it's safe, and notify your insurer if you plan to file a claim.
Right now
- Stay safe. Stay off the roof and away from water near outlets or fixtures. Shut off power to affected circuits only if it's safe to do so.
- Contain the water. Use buckets and towels, and move furniture and electronics out of the way.
- Relieve a bulging ceiling. A small puncture at the low point drains the water into a bucket and can prevent a bigger collapse.
- Document it. Take photos and video of the leak, the ceiling and anything damaged.
When the weather clears
Call a licensed roofer (How to Check a Florida Roofer's License) for an emergency tarp or temporary repair, and keep the receipts. Policies generally expect reasonable steps to prevent further damage.
Insurance
If you plan to file a claim, notify your insurer promptly. Florida's notice deadlines are in Filing a Roof Claim After a Hurricane. You stay in control of your claim.
Dry it out
Wet drywall and insulation can grow mold. Dry the area quickly and get damaged materials assessed.
Not legal or insurance advice. You stay in control of your own insurance claim.

Frequently asked questions
Should I go on the roof to stop a leak during a storm?
No. Wait until the storm passes and let a professional handle it.
Should I poke a hole in a bulging ceiling?
A small hole at the lowest point, over a bucket, can safely drain trapped water. Stay clear if it looks ready to collapse.
Will insurance cover the emergency tarp?
Many policies cover reasonable emergency repairs tied to a covered loss. Keep receipts and check your policy.
How fast can a roofer come out?
It depends on the weather and demand after the storm. Call 786-210-4936.
Can a leak cause mold?
Yes. Moisture in drywall and insulation can lead to mold, so dry things out quickly.
