Wind mitigation and your roof

A wind mitigation inspection documents your home's wind-resistant features on a state form. Insurers use it to apply discounts — and the roof is a big part of it.

The basics

  • The form is the Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form, OIR-B1-1802.
  • A completed form is valid for up to 5 years if there are no material changes to the home and no inaccuracies on the form.
  • Roof-related items include roof covering, roof-deck attachment, roof-to-wall attachment, roof shape and secondary water resistance.

Where we come in

The inspection itself is done by a qualified inspector you choose. When we replace your roof, we give you the permit, final inspection and product approval (NOA) documents so your inspector can verify what was installed. After a new roof, get an updated wind mitigation report and send it to your agent.

The state's My Safe Florida Home program has offered free inspections and matching grants for certain upgrades when funded; check its site for current availability.
