Getting Your Roof Ready for Hurricane Season
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Before it starts, get your roof inspected and fix loose or damaged areas, clear gutters and trim overhanging branches, photograph your roof and home for your records, and review your insurance and hurricane deductible. Then follow official guidance from the National Hurricane Center, FEMA and Miami-Dade County when a storm threatens.
Before the season (spring)
- Professional roof inspection; fix loose shingles or tiles and failed flashing
- Clear gutters, downspouts and roof valleys
- Trim branches over the roof
- Check attic for leaks or daylight
- Update your wind mitigation report if your roof changed (What Is a Wind Mitigation Inspection?)
Paperwork
- Take dated photos and video of the roof, attic, ceilings and contents (Ready.gov recommends keeping important records safe and accessible)
- Read your declarations page and know your hurricane deductible (Does Homeowners Insurance Pay for a New Roof in Florida?)
- Keep your policy and insurer contact info in a safe place you can reach
When a storm threatens
Follow the NHC and Miami-Dade emergency management. Secure outdoor items that could become projectiles, and don't go up on the roof in high winds.
